I think part of the problem is having an increasing number of characters (the dragons and the entire Night King army) that are completely CGI.

Compare last week's episode's with the second to last episode from the previous season "Battle of the Bastards." That was amazing filmmaking because they successfully merged effects and live action in a way that felt real.

This last episode on the other hand was so heavy on effects that it felt unconvincing. It reminds me of the difference between the original LOTR movies and The Hobbit.

    • Coming from VFX - I think it is all down to speed and money. Producers want both, audience wants speed but fans want quality.mugwart
    • This episode was mainly green screen. this takes time to build up a realistic world. The others would have been greenscreen in parts but shot outside. So ...mugwart
    • ... easier to make 'better'. CGIs an amazing tool and mostly goes unnoticed but yes when it 'pop's it is frustrating as fuck.mugwart
    • I've had no real contact with anyone on GoT since Season 1 so I do not know if this happens (read disclaimer) but a lot of directors/producers don't know whatmugwart
    • they want - so VFX houses have to go through time consuming versions instead of trying to make the shot realisticmugwart
    • for the record Id take bad CGI and have great writing and not the other way around. This shows writing "pop's" more than the dodge compsmugwart
    • I liked the gritty storylines and fluid timelines from earlier. With or without CGI, it's turned into a popular TV show that has massive viewing figures.Ianbolton
