If you want to maximise your upvotes you should keep to the main threads at the cost of missing out on the hardcore fans in the more relevant but less popular threads.
You could of course post on more than one thread, but you don't want to look desperate.The rationale behind this tactic is that main threads appear longer on the side bar, get more traffic and even though your post will quickly fall from the top due to competition, a user will normally scroll a bit to check what else is there.
