Chinese scientists just teleported an object into Earth's orbit for the first time.

    https://uk.news.yahoo.com/chines…

When they say 'object' they mean a photon, so knickers officially untwisted for now, but still pretty cool...

    • Surely they transmit the condition of the Earthbound partner in a previously-entangled pair, thereby changing the state of the Orbiting partner...detritus
    • ...rather than physically relocating the actual photon itself?detritus
    • ^ ya, they're transmitting information, not the photonGnash
    • they don't mention time-frame in the article. how long did it take?Gnash
    • theoretically, quantum entanglement happens instantly, regardless of distance.Gnash
    • Just had a daydream set on a future earth where they had successfully teleported hundreds of inanimate objects and try it on the first human...set
    • ... Only to have the body arrive in perfect physical condition, yet a vegetable. Leaving the disembodied soul at the other end...set
    • .. Destined to wander the earth alone for eternity.set
    • I imagine there'd probably be at least a few disembodied rats and pigs there already, that he could hang out with.set
    • but ultimately this could lead to instantaneous communication no?
      other planets, other galaxies etc?

    • ^ I think the particles would need to start off entangled,Gnash
    • Gmash, sadly, afaik, entanglement's limited to the speed of light.detritus
    • G*N*ash, sorry! :\detritus
    • My hope is that one day we can have super dense quantum arrays that can transmit through the planet direct. Would knock off some ping for FPS vs. AUS/NZdetritus
    • Would be kind of cool - you'd send an 'egg' of 'entangled quantumness' to a trusted partner, and forever more you'd be able to maintain a direct SoL connection.detritus
    • re: teleportation, I want to read this

    • set, you should read Stephen King's short story, The Jauntmonospaced
    • hahaha :)detritus
    • wow, detritus, we posted the same thing at the same timemonospaced
    • Entanglement, baby!detritus
    • one of my favorite stories as a child, and definitely the most spine tingling in my memorymonospaced
    • @det, it's a tough one to wrap my head around. I read stuff like this: http://www.nature.co…Gnash
    • but your are correct. it's all relative :)Gnash
    • 'spooky action at a distance' and is indeed faster than the speed of light - something that sent Einstein to his grave a v.unhappy man.fadein11
    • I'm always confused why speed of light etc. are even mentioned in relation to quantum entanglement though. Surely its nothing to do with space/distance?fadein11
