There really should be a blanket media silence on terrorism from now on. Don't give it any coverage or exposure whatsoever.

But no, of course the scum media won't do that, they thrive on this shit.

    • There also needs to be far more discussion and criticism of certain ideas within Islam, without being labelled a racist or bigot.inteliboy
    • if the wankers would be ppl of faith they would respect their own religious laws. it's ramadan, so muslims are instructed to refrain from fighting.uan
    • But when Ramadan is over, it's completely okay to fight.Claymantis
    • srsly asking, is this a positive psychology thing? like don't talk about suicide and it will happen less? what news should be allowed vs censored?sofas
    • for example should lousy education, poverty or pollution be covered?sofas
    • I am concerend that silencing the issue won't make it go away, and suppressin the discourse will create other problems, but maybe I didn't understandsofas
    • reduced reporting for sure - the rolling news is horrible to watch and feeds the problem on all sides.fadein11
    • @inteliboy - what media are you reading/watching? the mainstream media in the UK is heavily weighted against Islam - the problems are discusses/criticisedfadein11
    • endlessly.fadein11
    • I don't see mainstream media weighted heavily against Islam at all. If anything any criticism is quickly met with accusations of islamophobia and bigotry.IRNlun6
    • @fadein11 I also think the problem is the broadcasting oligopolies. Give the public access to broadcast what ever they want and mass media's power might declinesofas
    • You and I fadein have been arguing about this probably for a couple years now and my position is most definitely in the minority.IRNlun6
    • We have social media now. Controlling the news cycle is nearly impossible at this point.IRNlun6
    • never talked about this w/ fadein :)
Social media is not an equal alternative, folks don't have journalist privileges, access to broadcast equipment etc.
      sofas
    • terrorism thrives on mass fear. fear is best instilled in people through propaganda ie the media apart from the act itself. i'm with @set on this one.renderedred
    • @IRNlun6 I agree with you about the Islamophobia claims, but the wider picture includes the context of covering Islam vs others, coverage time and sentimentsofas
    • Are criticism of Catholicism met with the same reaction? I'd like to hope what set suggests would help. I just see it as impossible at this point.IRNlun6
    • Although I agree sofas on coverage time.IRNlun6
    • On second thought, criticism of Catholicism is more widely accepted because they allow it. They sure a hell didn't allow it in the past.IRNlun6
    • prsnly I want to be entertained and the news cycle delivers more. It's sick and so is society, but raitings (mixed with propaganda) talk. also chicken and eggsofas
    • @IRNInun Catholicism just deals with it differently. They don't accept criticism. Did anything change in regards to rampant pedophilia within their ranks ever?renderedred
    • @sofas exactly. media is an industry, ratings are the currency.renderedred
    • the Church hired better PRsofas
    • and lawyers ;)renderedred
    • Fair points. Perhaps it's an unrealistic expectation that any faith would self criticize.IRNlun6
    • Catholicism sure didn't deal with their issues with pedophilia from within.IRNlun6
    • the difference is we have people gladly blowing themselves up for religion. That's a problem that should be addressed from within, not denied as aformed
    • "only 1% are radicals". IMHO, there should be people turned over to intelligence daily on suspicion. It's the only way I see to stop this.formed
    • This is were I find the mass media contributing to the problem. For whatever reason they want to push the narrative of nothing to do with Islam.IRNlun6
    • In doing so, it also ignores that Muslims are most definitely fighting against this in their own communities.IRNlun6
    • Can't quite put it to words. There's a difference between saying a community has nothing to do with an internal problem, but they're dealing with it.IRNlun6
    • Vs. acknowledging the problem as well as their efforts to deal with it.IRNlun6
    • @IRUNlun6, I agree, and this might be a conspiracy, but maybe not saying it outright increases rage, frustration, anger at PC and vigilante, which fuel raitingssofas
    • and support propaganda goalssofas
    • @sofas I agree entirely and it's tough to put a finger on why. Does it serve a grander goal of globalization, or more ratings and profit?IRNlun6
    • @irn - I said UK media? You live in UK? If so i didnt realise. That being said we were discussing media and all the dominant msm in uk is right leaning and yesfadein11
    • The Islam debate is never far from the front pages / screens. UK liberal media is in the minority here. How ironicfadein11
    • Liberal as in liberal not the neo variety which so many people seem to confuse these daysfadein11
    • I don't live in the UK fadein11 so I'll concede in assuming your media is as biased towards the "left" as in the US. Although I find similarities in narrative.IRNlun6
    • Only one thing can be done to stop this, re-write the Koran.robotron3k
    • haha - the UK media is biased towards the right - anyone UK citizen will tell you that. And just to be clear for a 3rd time - Islam isfadein11
    • under constant scrutiny by it.fadein11
    • never a good idea to assume when dealing with v.complex / difficult subjects.fadein11
    • Especially when about countries you know little about.fadein11
    • I thought you were gonna say "build a wall," or, "ban all muslims," but you surprised me and said something so humanitarian and caring. You never cease to amazemonospaced
    • Even the historically left Guardian plays puppet to it's masters these days. Channel 4 news is probably the closest to a left media we have and The Mirror butfadein11
    • that's a reactionary redtop.
And don't get me started on the BBC - the most biased of public service broadcasters.
      fadein11
    • Yeah this needs to be part of the discussion. The whole purpose of terrorism is to create a media spectacle and that's exactly what Western media delivers foryuekit
    • them. Not that it should be ignored but imagine if it was covered at the same level as any other tragedy, would the number of attacks go up or down as a result?yuekit
    • ugh... they're zealots... they do this for GOD not MEDIA ATTENTION. Yeah, the attention furthers their cause... but it's all about their FAITH.PonyBoy
    • They're willing to die w/out a second thought... 'ignorantia' isn't a solution, ffs.PonyBoy
    • I'm waiting for someone to say 'we just need to help them get jobs and improve their living situations' as a solution for some faith-driven maniac... :/PonyBoy
    • No such thing as faith driven in this case. Quran clearly forbids killing innocent civilians. But for the last 100 years Muslim people are massacredBeeswax
    • and humiliated by Western powers this is the psychological outcome of this. They are crazy not Muslim or anything. But I blame your gvernments for deliberatelyBeeswax
    • pushing people to this stage, For them it's a win win situation.Beeswax
    • I'm a lucky Muslim, but if my house was in Palestine or Iraq or Afghanistan and one day "peace powers" killed my beloveds destroy my city I don't know whatBeeswax
    • I would turn into. Same for you. This is the result of your countries' dangerous politics.
Don't we all know that west created ISIS, or are we playing dumb?
      Beeswax
    • Why are they willing to die, bees? All 3 must be mental patients? Bullshit. It may not be in line w/your beliefs, Bees... these guys died for 'their' God.PonyBoy
    • is it the western powers bee, or is it muslim powers? Saudis vs Persians, Sunni vs Shia, everyone vs kurds and all the proxy wars surrounding it?_niko
    • yes, george bush was a complete fuck up and the US should never have done what they did, but blaming western powers for the whole mess in the middle east is_niko
    • laughable, turn the mirror inwards and see what the real issue is._niko
    • there is one nation in the middle east that all western powers kneel down and suck the dick of, why don't you start with that one before casting stones._niko
