She did NOT do what detritus said she said. She was drawing a line between the "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it" and the "people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change." Here is the entire HRC quote, in context:

"You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric. Now some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.”

“But the other basket — and I know this because I see friends from all over America here — I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas — as well as, you know, New York and California — but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change. It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”

I was a Bernie supporter in the primaries, voted for her in the general. I am not a huge fan of HRC, and agree with the person who said late on, "Hillary will make a great president of the country we have now; Bernie would be a great president for the country that we need."

    • well donekona
    • ponyboy said that above btw.kona
    • Yes, I see that now. Sorry Detritus! And I agree. I wake up every day thinking we're all dead and in purgatoryallthethings
    • Two baskets... she separated the people into two types of folks... how are you not understanding this? HALF OF TRUMP'S SUPPORTERS are racist??PonyBoy
    • Such pathetic generalizations (of the common man) and foul generalizations to boot.... you don't win this way... half of Trump supports are racist, huh?PonyBoy
    • If she wanted to win-over any of these folks on Trump's side YOU DO NOT ATTACK THEM!! lolz... how do you not get that?PonyBoy
    • Trump didn't try either. It sure as hell seemed like he was talking to the half of his voters who were racist, etc, at times. Got 'em all riled up grabbing gunsmonospaced
    • oh really? What Trump supports rose up w/their guns, mono?PonyBoy
    • The one who shot up the pizza joint to break up a basement sex ring run by Hillary in a pizza joint with no basement.kona
    • @pony - you know he didn't say that - the point was perfectly clear and true.fadein11
    • PonyBoy, it's a race to see which of us missed the point. I know she generalized, she even said she was generalizing...allthethings
    • ...but she was saying she understood that many of his supporters had real problems and needed to be reached; pity she couldn't reach them.allthethings
    • And yes, half of his supporters are in the basket of deplorables. She was never going to get their votes.allthethings
    • 'got 'em all riled up grabbing guns'... what am I missing there, fade?
allthethings... you think half of Trump supporters are racist? HALF???
      PonyBoy

    • "But the liberals created this mess..."
Nah nothing to do with failing capitalism and the relentless war machine. Nope blame the liberals lol.

    • You mention not even half the country voting, mono... you think calling the lot of the racists is going to get them to come join-in?PonyBoy
    • *themPonyBoy
    • @pony - Trumps campaign was engineered to appeal to a certain type of person. Those who have been consumed by nostalgia and imagine a better America existedfadein11
    • before. Those who got off on big fantasy daydreams like a 3000 mile long wall to keep the 'enemy' out. Its all silly nonsense certain people lap up, those whofadein11
    • blame their own problems on perceived threats. Trump totally tapped into that and its plain to see anyone of a racist leaning would have voted Trump. But Ifadein11
    • imagine the majority are low level racists - the kind who tell their neighbour a black family moved in down the street but won't actually do anything.fadein11
    • but I'm a liberal snowflake - what do I know. I will be nostalgic for a tolerant society soon.fadein11
    • it's not half its more like 3/4moldero
    • hehe... see... your thought-process that they're 'hidden racists' is what's fucked up, fade. When Hillary declared 'half' of them racist she left BOTH halfs...PonyBoy

    • ... the left talks some serious double-standard-esqu... shit on a daily / hourly basis. Stop calling everyone the worst fucking names in the book...PonyBoy
    • ... if you want to have an actual conversation w/them. Trump didn't call his potential voters out as half 'anything'...PonyBoy
    • ... he took the 'what have you got to lose?' approach (especially w/the Black community) pointing out they've been under libby policy for 50+ years...PonyBoy
    • .. .in cities like Baltimore, Detroit and the like. He didn't call them lazy uneducated assholes and say 'get off your asses' like your typical republictwat...PonyBoy
    • ... and he didn't tell them that half of them were racist bigoted assholes. He appealed to a few of them and got their vote.PonyBoy
    • wait... BUT RUSSIAAAA!!!

      never mind
      PonyBoy
