A little light reading. Feel better? I don't.

    The Shallow State

Forget the conspiracy theories. Something much more dangerous is seeking to gut our government and change the character of our society.

"Donald Trump, champion and avatar of the shallow state, has won power because his supporters are threatened by what they don’t understand, and what they don’t understand is almost everything. Indeed, from evolution to data about our economy to the science of vaccines to the threats we face in the world, they reject vast subjects rooted in fact in order to have reality conform to their worldviews. They don’t dig for truth; they skim the media for anything that makes them feel better about themselves. To many of them, knowledge is not a useful tool but a cunning barrier elites have created to keep power from the average man and woman. The same is true for experience, skills, and know-how. These things require time and work and study and often challenge our systems of belief. Truth is hard; shallowness is easy."

    • Ah, the irony.set
    • pretty much the same script can be used on the left.Gnash
    • lol, rightmonospaced
    • one needs to look no further than this thread.Gnash
    • Poor guy, the author is really sad Hillary didn't win. Don't let him rub his sadness on you...robotron3k
    • @Gnash - there aren't too many (or any) on the left denying climate change, the economic and social benefits of medicare, or that think constantly producingBuddhaHat
    • demonstrable lies from the White House is a good idea. That is solely the domain of the stupid, the unhinged, the factually deficient right side of politics.BuddhaHat
    • and for robotard to come up with a 'waagh, Clinton didn't win' response perfectly exemplifies how shallow and stupid his thinking on this really is.BuddhaHat
    • With the GOP unable to put together an effective legislative counter to the ACA, imagining something like the 'deep state' is truly ridiculous.BuddhaHat
    • They can't even craft an effective piece of legislation, yet simultaneously their supporters think a cabal of experienced military and intelligence staffBuddhaHat
    • are seeking to subvert institutional power to advance their personal goals. It's fucking retarded, and there isn't anybody on the left that actually thinks thatBuddhaHat
    • so, no @Gnash, the script, as detailed in this article, cannot be equally applied to those on the left. That is just wrong.BuddhaHat
    • Those on the left don't think it's a good idea to cut funding for fact-based fields of inquiry that contradict their views, ie. climate science.BuddhaHat
    • People on the left don't consider the press 'the enemy of the American people', by doing their job, which is critical to sustaining democracy.BuddhaHat
    • The left don't think electing a billionaire with no experience to the education dept is smart. The right seek to actively dumb down the US, and it's working.BuddhaHat
    • Dude, Buddha you hit it out of the park.kona
    • gat damn son, preachdigitdaily
    • I was referring to the posted script, not the entire article, which I had not readGnash
    • don’t assume that i’m supporting the rights positions — I disagree with much of their policy.Gnash
    • The script is full of assumptions and hyperbole. I am suggesting that the left is just as myopic than the right.Gnash
    • The left absolutely ’skims the media’ for the feel-good, world-view confirming, news just as much as the right.Gnash
    • The right do not all think that “the press is the enemy of the people,” Trump is the one suggesting that the press is untruthful.Gnash
    • There may well be fringe right that agree, but remember that there are also fringe left that think trump is ‘literally hitler’Gnash
    • Yes, repubs are more skeptical of the theory of evolution, but it’s only by a surprisingly slim margin...Gnash
    • ...with 39 percent of repubs rejecting it as compared to 30 percent of Dems.Gnash
    • Also surprisingly, Dems and Repubs believe in the false link between vaccines and autism at roughly equal levels.Gnash
    • Repubs are divided evenly on the GMO question. Democrats rate them unsafe by a 26-point margin, despite almost 2,000 studies spanning a decade saying otherwiseGnash
    • On the big issue of global warming it’s true that 64% of Dems believe in man-made global warming, while only 22 percent of Repubs do...Gnash
    • ...when it comes to solutions, the Dems aren’t always as science-minded. Only 45% of Dems support expanding the use of nuclear energy as compared to 62% of RepubsGnash
    • both sides have blind spots when data-based evidence contradicts their political preferencesGnash
    • Believe me, I would much rather have another person in office. But the myopic hyperbole is a bit much sometimes.Gnash
    • and I'm not speaking from the POV of a conservative. I've voted NDP in every election here except one, and that was for the LiberalsGnash
