How much you got to spend?
If the kid has an iPad then there's lots of awesome apps out there for pretty serious music making.
Samplr, Moog have a few, Korg Gadget etc

If the kid wants to get into software then Ableton (&Push2 controller) is as deep as you can go but quite pricey.
Maschine is a good start and good fun.

Teenage Engineering is a great instrument, it looks like a toy but is about £600.

Cheap fun things likethe Korg Monotron , MonoTribe or Teenage Engineerings PO range (Pocket Operators) are great fun but not really serious things for music making.

    • Yup, iPad and the app offerings from Korg, Moog, Akai is a good investment, most flexibility as a device, is cheap... and a small keyboard controller w/ padsprophetone
    • awesome, thanks for the advice, cheers micro, prophet_niko
    • I have a 10 yr old too... and honestly his generation is happy with touch devices, shows no interest (yet) in my synths, drum machinesprophetone
    • ...that stuff is too knobby and 'old timey' hahaha... one day he'll wake up and be like 'yo this is an mpc 60!!!!... did you even know?!'prophetone
    • ....and i'll be like 'yeah, mitts off kid. you have your ipad...' (and quietly pffft to myself)prophetone
    • novation circuit is worth a look too. although if they're in to rap they'll resent it not being an MPC.kingsteven
