Packaging is so wasteful.

Was in Japan recently. For such a forward thinking country they use a lot of packaging and a lot of plastic bags.
I'm hoping that their recycling is just so good and efficient that they can afford to do this.

An example - buying 3 cakes at a bakery department of a supermarket. In the UK you'd either get all three bundled into a box or chucked into a bag - maybe a little greaseproof paper slip around each one.

In Japan (and this wasn't just a one-off, it happened in three different places) each cake was wrapped in the greaseproof paper, then each was put in its own bag, then all three put into one bag.
Any time we bought something we were automatically given bags and had to keep refusing as we were just stuffing stuff into the bags we already had.

    • They also don't have public garbage cans, so there is the expectation that the bags will be reused for carrying garbage home.i_monk
