A tattoo sketch for my best friend to commemorate the birth of the son he and his wife adopted a few months months ago.

Work in progress. Would appreciate some feedback from someone who knows about American Traditional lettering.

    • I like it. P'haps too much in such a small space for a tattoo - could it be squarer to allow more space. But I do like it and I know little about tattoos.fadein11
    • Looks nice. Not a big fan of that Y tho. Seems a bit 'simple'. Maybe it's because it doesn't follow the baseline?scruffics
    • Thank you both. Will try opening it up between the large letters along with a symmetrical Y.monospaced
    • meant to say 'but' I know little about tattoos not and...fadein11
    • I understood. I agree. Needs a tad more room to breath as it gets a bit dense in there.monospaced
    • I also don't know a lot about tattoos besides what my friends have and what I learned watching years of ink master. I did research type for this one tho.monospaced
    • My friends have a sail boat and it's a big part of their lives. They wanted a literal nautical theme but I have them this subtle one instead.monospaced
    • well now you have said that I like it more - perhaps get more wave feeling through the middle of the H & M - but it is there anyway. one of those jobs that isfadein11
    • nice to do but a bit stressful as well - especially for friends.fadein11
    • Tramp Stamp?utopian
    • Looks feminine. Is he femi?Hayoth

    • try making the crossbars like a line of waves cresting, and yea, that y is hurt. looks ok thoughterry_cloth
    • Thanks. The crossbars are pretty traditional so I don't want to stray too far from the standard and "rules" of American traditional lettering.monospaced
    • It certainly has a feminine feel. It's primarily for the wife, but my buddy will get it too. It's like a sailor tat, so feminine works. Like a "mom" tat.monospaced
    • But hanks terry. I had a feeling you might be familiar with these. The part that bugs me the most are the top serifs on the M being busy.monospaced
    • wave through the middle or not, the symmetry in the middle is distracting, both doo dads on the m flipping up doesn't look right. also, the rightside down barsterry_cloth
    • having more weight than the serifs and bits is far from traditional, might as well play around with it if you aren't going to stick to the script pun intendedterry_cloth
