Trying not to open a new topic so i'm putting this here.

I have more or less 5k to spend on photo gear, after looking into different systems I decided for the 5D Mark III that I'm already very familiar with + a Sigma 20mm 1.4 and the Canon 100mm 2.8 L.

Still vaguely hesitating between the 20mm and a 35 but I think these suit my needs best. I don't already own Canon lenses but Canon is all I've been using these past few years appart from Hasselblads.

Now the 5D iV is rumoured to come out next month, if it does it will likely be at least 1k more than the III's current price.
4K video would be nice but I don't need it today, 120fps 1080p video I could definitely find a use for though but my main focus is photography.

It bugs me to sit waiting for a rumoured new release when I'm eager to get shooting, but it seems silly to buy the old gen today if new gen comes out in 4 weeks, but I can't know for sure.

My question : as is often the case in other fields, I'd like to know if from your collective experiences the last batch of a camera like the 5D is more reliable (components, bugs etc) than the first batch of the following generation ?

    Thanks!

    • I would wait until the MarkIV is available, and then find a used MarkIII with a low shutter count for cheap.nb
    • There are tons of people that always want the latest camera but they don't actually shoot much.nb
    • I still regularly use the 5D Mk II because it's just awesome. I also have 5d Mk III and 5D S R bodies. However, there's a truth that some care to ignore...Morning_star
    • ..., the camera is just a tool. What you get out of it largely depends on your abilities to maximise what you've got in your hands. One final thing...Morning_star
    • ...Invest in the glass. L series all the way.Morning_star
    • having only 20 and 100mm lenses seems odd.johnny_wobble
    • 35mm is such a great focal length for 35mm film or sensor. If I could take only one lens, it'll always be the 35.nb
    • nb, definitely. 35mm is my favourite.Morning_star
    • you sure you may not want the Nikon D750, its very, very nice and half the price of a 5D III which is getting old-ish....vaxorcist
    • Canon has to be kidding if they don't make the 5D Mk IV a 4K device.CyBrainX
    • I take it back. You can shoot 4K and it should be available next month according to this. http://www.wired.com…CyBrainX
