Memorial Day weekend in Chicago is apparently no joke. I was listening to an NPR story on Friday that people were worried about what was going to happen-- locking themselves in their houses and hunkering down. Apparently 69 people were shot this time around; 56 were shot last year.

As of April 1, the murder rate had risen 74% from the same period last year in Chicago. The city saw 141 murders as of April 1 this year, compared with 82 murders at the same point last year. Police reported 677 shootings this year compared with 359 at the same point last year.

    • I've been in Chicago for 15 years; not necessarily saying the crime alone in making us move, nor saying these haven't been the best years of my lifemg33
    • But we're headed to the suburbs in the next few months once we buy a house, and I'm excited to leave a lot of this behind. It's just the right time now.mg33
    • The public schools here are awful; you can try and get your kid tested into the better programs, but it's so much pressure, and if they don't get inmg33
    • most of the schools you can then go to are terrible.mg33
    • The crime thing is the worst though. It's probably even worse than what is reported, but they manipulate the numbers, downgrade crimes, etc.mg33
    • Mg13, surely this thread falls under the new antipolitics thread clause no?terry_cloth
