So... what is / how is Facebook doing this?

I meet someone, we trade numbers, the day after a call or a text exchange, that person is the first person on the "Add friends" suggestion list.

My phone number isn't connected to Facebook.

My theory so far is that it requires that both parties have installed WhatsApp (which does use my current phone number), another Facebook property, which allows Facebook to see the "Contacts" matching in each party's phone, therefore initiating the connection.

It's kind of invasive, totally creepy, and very well executed.

Facebook's algorithm is all like "Hey, we know you know each other, be Facebook friends!"

    • the other person looked you up.docpoz
    • yeah.. not too hard to find people if you know their last name and cityPonyBoy
    • i used to believe that until one week a friend and i were discussing this and we had both noticed a recent influx of ex-gf suggestions.imbecile
    • i presume it to be a variation or a separate algorithm that looked at past credit receipt history and drew assumptionsimbecile
    • ex... hmm... perhaps based on mutual friends then?PonyBoy
    • i remember hearing / reading about a predictive algorithm used by credit card companies that can predict divorce 2 years out with 90%+ accuracyimbecile
    • besides, it's Facebook, they're always up to somethingimbecile
    • If you have FB on your phone, they have your number/location/cont... usage...Al_dizzle
    • I do not Al_dizzle, desktop only. Just WhatsApp on my phone, which I am presuming is the same thing as far as their tracking is concerned.imbecile
    • I have noticed recently ads appearing on fbook after chatting (vocal chatting) about something vaguely related - happened twice, 1st time I thought afadein11
    • coincidence and perhaps was twice.fadein11
    • they are using "Big Data" or cross-referencing your known credentials against databases that DO have your phone number, but that is illegal.drake-von-drake
    • this is done CONSTANTLY out there, in the data mining world. if you only knew. This happens constantly in the automotive retail worlddrake-von-drake
    • additionally, just because it's illegal, doesn't mean groups stop doing it. I wouldn't think FB takes this chance, but you have no idea how your current data isdrake-von-drake
    • being exported and cross-referenced. That's my assessment.drake-von-drake
    • oh my god. cardealer has spoken.
nothing like that. you or your friend searched for the other one, and checked his wall. it's called expected connection.
      sted
    • fade, not the first I've heard of that either.

    • 2nd search for a friend who works at fbook and ask him/her about this maybe this way you paranoia goes away.sted
    • fade that's a very scary feature Samsung got caught using this tech on smarttvssted
    • it's not paranoia. it's fascination. these algorithms are very real.imbecile
    • Wow look at sted using big words. fucking lmao with content discovery platform link. how about posting an actual platform FFS!drake-von-drake
    • you're also out of your mind if you think platforms don't provide credentials on users based upon subscription level, etc. maybe not in this case, but itdrake-von-drake
    • absolutely happens, just look at LinkedIn, that's part of their fucking model, genius.drake-von-drake
    • "Facebook's ad-based business model works best when you're interacting with as many people as possible, the algorithm behind the scenes works to push this."imbecile
    • yes they are, but just think for a moment:
you never had contact with that person. so there is no reference in any of the dbs :)
      sted
    • and just do one thing to test this out: turn off the searchable profile feature on facebook and u will see what happens next time :)sted
    • and yes linkedin works like that. and that's linkedin.
drake-von-drake, stfu and go back to politics and cars.

    • sted is the ultimate assumption muppet. I don't think you live anywhere near Hungary assfacedrake-von-drake
    • "Facebook's ad-based business model works best when you're interacting with as many people as possible, the algorithm behind the scenes works to push this."drake-von-drake
    • ^ precisely imbecile and where do you think they get that data? from 3rd party systems just as much as their own.drake-von-drake
    • and just to make sted look like a clown, I previously worked as a contractor for a passive analytics company that doesn't use tags but server logs, far strongerdrake-von-drake

I work for Gravityreco from time to time.designed 3 apps in the last year based on CR platforms Look up who they are before you shake your tiny worm.

    • David
I could give a fuck who you worked for, FB and the like utilize 3rd party data for matching purposes, that's a fact.
      drake-von-drake
    • their entire Power Editor tool is based upon this technique. the dummies that have given FB their information are now being preyed upon.drake-von-drake
    • Where did I mentioned that fb is not using third-party data? Nowhere.
What did I explained in my prev posts?
How this works in this case imbecile described.

    • Satellite imagery showed Zukerbergh the meeting of you two. He zoomed in on his VR headset and used face recognition to ID you 2 and then connected you on FB.Krassy
    • ...you know, just playing God, that's all.

      The future is now.
      Krassy
    • Krassy with the answers, finally!imbecile
    • i'm changing my theory to include any Facebook property installed on this phone. insta, whats, face, etc. it is a matched contact connection being introduced.imbecile
    • scrolling through my "you may know", i can find other evidence of this as well. I did not look them up, i do not believe they all looked me up, it's more.imbecile
    • at this point, i'm sure Facebook has shown me several people i didn't realize I knew.imbecile
    • I've seen evidence of them plucking data from an ancient @hotmail.com account attempting to match up my pseudonym with former e-mail account contactsdrake-von-drake
    • straight fucking dodgy and there's no way those contacts would be sitting as "people you might know" without access to that data.drake-von-drake
    • it's just too case specific and I am happy that I never used my real name and current E-mail at that shit site. fuck zuckerterd, the platform sucksdrake-von-drake
