Learned about the bar-tailed godwit today. Nine fucking days. Non stop. Yukon to New Zealand.
The bar-tailed godwit breeds in Alaska and Siberia. When the cold season approaches, the shorebirds stage in the Yukon River delta and take flight. Next stop: New Zealand. That’s 7,000 miles, the entire length of the Pacific Ocean, without stopping — the longest migration for any bird. Scientists established the migration route using bird bands, although satellite tracking devices were used to confirm the birds don’t stop flying the entire nine-day journey.
