I guess most people know what a graphic designer does nowadays... If they still look like they don’t have a clue I just say "I design magazines and books and posters and websites and stuff". If they don’t get it by then, I just grab the next printed matter lying around and punch them in the face with it.
Shockingly my own mother, who I thought knows what I do for a living (because I explained it a million times and even gave her books I made), thought I am the guy who does the closing credits she sees on TV. While that is not entirely incorrect, I came to think that she may be a bit thick concerning my professional endeavours.
