I remember having a similar conversation many (many) years ago with someone while at university. We discussed the perception of reality in relation to light and how it plays an integral part in how we see the world around us - colour, shape etc. An obvious subject, of course, but we went deeper - could it be argued that solid objects were in fact *not* solid when light doesn't hit them as it is light which essentially creates our world and the things in it?

Views passed back and forth, arguments were had about the importance of personal belief and interpretation of what is 'solid' and how to define it within a framework that could be applied on a daily basis. This continued for many hours, with both of us shifting and accepting our (new) views about the physical world.

It was 4am and we were in a pub lock-in arguing about the colour of a table.
