oooooookay, just figured it out.
down-voting literally moves the post up or down depending on its ranking with other ranked posts.
when i down-voted a zero-voted post, it knocked it to the bottom of the thread.
the top-voted items, on the other hand, stayed at the top of the page giving them the greatest exposure.
interesting but it might take a while to adapt to that one...
