  It's a middle manager, not the bossman, who wants me to become an employee. I talked to him more about it — he's worried about someone unqualified ending up at the desk he'll collaborate with, and he's looking to use my proposal as bargaining power to get paid better himself.

  In short, I'm seeing less and less in this for myself, so I bowed out of considering it, and let him know I just want to continue in my current arrangement.

  Thanks for the perspective, folks. Time to get less lazy.
