You can make money from the adverts in-video and on-page - it's not a lot but if you have a successful channel then you can make a lot.
As an example my video channel has had nearly 9000 views to my videos which has made me $11 so far.
You don't see any of this money until you make $100.

If you have a successful channel reviewing specialist gear - say for example guitars - then yes you might then get brands sending you their wares for demo/review purposes and some you may get to keep.

Also if you're making a lot of money from the advertising then its a small loss to buy something thats brand new on the market, film yourself unboxing, using and reviewing it then shoving it up on eBay where it'll get snapped up as its so new.

I do a lot of product research on YouTube when i'm fancying buying a new piece of musical gear (thats where youtube wins) or even down to buying a garden security light - found demos of how good lights actually were on youtube. win!
