    1. The gov't used to have to manufacture the treat to scare the the public into submission (so the gov't could impose any laws they wanted). Today all they have to do is take some minority jackass group and paint them in the scariest colors possible. As a result we fear and they (the gov't) gets their way.

    2. Many of those "fundamentalist" groups are made up of middle class university educated westerners (UK, Germany, even US) - not exactly 3rd world places where with education you have no future. Which begs the question "why are they doing it despite all the opportunities?" The answer is that in the times of no ideology - "make lots of money" is NOT an ideology people - especially so the ones with education - turn to more meaningful ways of existence. This is something that western culture has to deal with - house with a car and 2 kids is not everyone's dream.
