I think you can over-generalize about this because there is plenty of diversity of opinion within the Jewish community. The American Jewish community is a lot more liberal than that of Israel, and many of them don't feel much attachment to Israel at all.
But it's definitely true that there is a lot of influence in politics and in the mainstream media. It's basically an article of faith within American politics that you support Israel, otherwise you will be ostracized.
