When I was in high school (ca. 2000) the new wing of our high school was built with fire doors intended to trap a shooter in just one wing of the school. They would do "lock down drills" when they would lower these and all the teachers would lock their doors. They would announce lock down w/o panic inducing sirens-- instead they would just say over the intercom, "Will [the principal] please come to the office? Will [the principal] please come to the office." Then all the teachers would lock their doors and tell the kids to get against the back wall.
