I'm not sure why people are so afraid to say they just don't know what caused something like this. Obviously like intelliboy said he was mentally unstable and that was a significant factor, but if you try to analyze any deeper than that, none of us really know the guy's life or where his problems originated from.
I'm sure there will be dozens of news stories talking about how this reflects our social media culture, attitudes towards women, our violent media, etc...but they will all be projections of the writer's views onto a situation they barely understand.
