I lived in NOLA for 8 years. Robotinc has the right idea.
Snugg Harbor is also on Frenchmen and is one of the best places to see music if you are willing to pay the $20 to get in.
Jacques-Imo's is GREAT cajun food uptown with a casual atmosphere.
The Columns Hotel Bar is on the St. Charles streetcar line and you can get a good cocktail and drink on their patio-- you'll feel like colonel sanders.
The Sazerac Bar is in the Roosevelt Hotel downtown; they invented the Sazerac (perhaps even the culinary cocktail itself), and it's the best place to get a real drink in the city. French 75 in the Quarter is a close second.
Po-Boys are best at Parkway Tavern Mid-city.
Drink Abita Beers.
DON'T PEE ON THE STREET. You can get away with murder, but don't pee on the street or you will go to central lock-up.Other Fine Dining:
Cochon, Stellas, NOLA, Dantes Kitchen (uptown for brunch),
Brennan's restaurants are overpriced, as are Emeril'sMimi's in the Marigny (bar) is a great divey spot that is not known to tourists but not far from Frenchmen and the Quarter.
