They are popular because they are popular.
The whole 'being popular' phenomenon is in fact very simple and easy to understand, once you have the chance to step in the wheel, it turns by itself. And since humanz is a stupid species, we tend to like what other people like and vice versa to an unfinished wheel of popular-because-popular.
