What did he expect? Who says yes to this?
"I really love your work and believe you would be perfect for this assignment, the only downfall is that because it is proactive, our budget is very slim to none."
We think you would be perfect for the job...the only downside being that we can't pay you. But don't worry, I'm going to throw in a bunch of meaningless platitudes about how you will win awards for your unpaid work, and that will totally convince you.
