It does seem rather strange to meĀ as well that fingerprint scanning to unlock your phone is a major feature add in the new iPhone 5s. Who was honestly asking for this? Not I, nor anyone I know that I've talked with about it.
Also, after coming off nine months of work for a client in the prosthetics and orthotics space, I am left wondering about the accessibility of such a feature for people who legitimately have no fingerprints. Almost 2 million people in the US have major limb amputations, with almost 40% of them being upper appendage. Almost 100% of prosthetics are touch capacitive. Unless Touch ID is optional, and the iPhone 5s allows fallback to a keypad entry based security system, seems like Apple could be limiting security features to nearly a million users.
