I was in your exact same position back in January of this year, however I do primary web design/development and not any print work. I rarely need to deal with Illustrator and print-resolution files, but I have Photoshop open almost all the time.

I love small, light, portable machines and I was seriously considering the Mac Book Air. When I work at home I hook up to an external display, keyboard, mouse, etc..., but I love a laptop that's easy to bring with me everywhere on the road.

I think the Air actually would have been fine for me, but I wound up going with a factory refurbished 13" MacBook Pro with retina display - primarily because the retina display is so damn beautiful! When I compared the two in store the screen on the retina just blew me away compared to the air.

I opted for the i5 processor but they actually shipped me the i7, so I was way stoked. This machine can handle my needs just fine. The fan only turns on when I'm running some crazy flash video. Multi-tasking is a breeze. In short, I'm pretty happy with it and I think for me getting the MBP was a better choice.
