Lance is an athlete and a competitor.
His positives (& negatives) are multiplied exponentially by the public eye.
People love heroes; worshipping false idols.
Their heroes are more often than not revealed as mortal through a revealing of character flaws either mental or physical.
Lance is simply a martyr for a generation of athletes who wanted to perform like gods.
