For me the draw is, I get recommendations on new places to go based on the kind of things my friends and I like.
Eg, in a new area, or even a new town our country and it will work out the kind of coffee shops, restaurant and bars you might like based on what you and your network of friends like and the kind of people that also like those things.
So I might check-in at a boutiquey type coffee shop in london. Then if I'm in New York, they might say, based on that place in london you went to, you'll probably like this one too (and given the number of people checking in a multiple places, it's often a good call).That and checking in can get you discounts etc. Plus sometimes it's good to know if a friend happens to be somewhere nearby if you want to meet up randomly
