  Gangnam means "south (남) of the river (강)", the river being the Han (Han Gang, 한강), and is the name of one of the more affluent districts (gu) in Seoul. In the 90s I lived in Apgeujeong, Gangnam-gu, but it wasn't anything special at the time. (I also lived in Jamsil-dong, in Songpa-gu just east of Gangham, within a short walk of the Olympic park.)
