you've got to write to become a better writer. Strunk & White is a good reference. You can find other grammar and style guides online.
It also helps to find somebody whose writing you like and really watch how they write and absorb their tricks and pacing. Copy a few people's styles and eventually you'll develop your own voice within a framework that you're heading after.
