    To demonstrate the relative safety of aerial defense atomic weaponry, 5 soldiers agreed to stand 18,500 feet below an exploding nuclear warhead in 1957. This photograph was recently declassified along with video showing the blast and the soldiers' reactions.

    The rationale behind these relatively small atomic weapons was to compensate for a lack of accuracy in aerial defense by exploding a comparatively large area of the sky. The explosions would be expected to intercept incoming jets and other missiles. Thousands of these missiles were ready to use at a moment's notice without the express order of the US president.
