At the design college I went to, a speech class was mandatory. And it was guaranteed that you were presenting a project to your peers in some class at least every two or three days.

When I graduated, I started working for an agency and right off the bat I had to give presentations. One after the other. CEOs... board members in meeting rooms type of stuff. It's a nerve-wracking setting for even the best speakers... nevermind shy people.

If you're a mediocre designer, you're probably doing freelance work for your friends, or working in-house, and won't ever have to present anything at all. And this is the type of designer this article is probably referring to. Which is just ignorant.
