< german, living in germany.
GEMA: Artists (members) get money from them. How? Radio stations, TV stations, every public show etc. has to pay GEMA a licence fee for media they need. Artists get some of the money. So, Radio Asspain plays your song, you get money from GEMA.
GEZ: They collect money from every household in germany to pay the german public broadcasters like TV-stations (ARD, ZDF...) and radio stations. You must pay by devices you have:
- If your Computer is able to connect to the internet (even if you dont have internet) you pay
- the little radio you got as a gift and never use - you pay
- the radio in your car - you pay
- grandmas old radio in the basement - you pay
- smartphone - you pay
- tv - you payGEZ wants around €50/month from you if you are "medium equipped" with gadgets. Hell, even a 5 year old Nokia acts like a radio. The media they produce is mostly for old people, because germany is full of them. really full.
Problem:
GEMA thinks youtube acts like a big broadcaster and wants money for every song clicked (I remember, 0,01€/click was in discussion). Even if you upload a video of your last houseparty and a song is played in the background - they want youtube to pay.tl;dr:
GEMA: Gets money from broadcasters, gives it to artists.
GEZ: Collects money from you, gives it to the public broadcasters.
Problem: GEMA wants too much money, doesnt get it.
