i've made about 10 trips to kauai both between going with my wife and solo backpacking. highly recommended, can't say enough good things. i've stayed at resorts and done the tourist thing, and i've lived out of tent backcountry for weeks, and everything in between. i've also been on maui a bit, which was nice, but i highly prefer kauai.
this is the best site if you have any desire to hike/camp/etc:

a great team of guys run it and and it has quality info in each trails comments.if you want to go on some off the path hikes, look up eric ( http://www.hikekauaiwithme.com/ ), excellent guide.
compared to the other islands, kauai is a sleepy island, food/nightlife is minimal compared to maui for instance. its natural features and outdoor activities are where it excels.
i prefer northshore. princeville if you want to stay in a high end place, hanalei if you want a more chill atmosphere. poipu is also nice, thats where the hyatt is, 2nd nicest resort on island, behind the st regis @ princeville. ask away if you have any questions.
- Excellent angry bear; well look into these guides as we'll want to explore the hell out of this place...ideaist
