Went to Maui and Kauai in 2010 for 18 days. Best trip I've had in 10 years. Loved both islands for different reasons. Stayed in Kihei town in Maui and Wailua in Kauai but we ran around both islands so much that we were not really anchored to our condos. They were mainly a place to put our heads down when we were exhausted from hiking, kayaking, surfing or swimming.

We tried to live as locally as possible by renting condos and buying groceries for lunch and some dinners. We tried to treat the vacation in a backpacking style as opposed to a resort style.

There is so much to do in both places if you are up for adventure. Rent a car for the whole time you are there. You can get smoking deals from Hotwire.

Maui - Hike Haleakalā for sure. Leave at about 3 am to drive up the mountain to start and see the house of the rising sun. Frickin breathtaking. Road to Hana was really cool and the black sand beaches near hana provide another hiking an swimming opportunity. Swim and snorkel anywhere off the shore in South Maui and you will be chillin with the Honu (turtles) and manta rays. Take a snorkeling trip to Molokini to see more crazy sea life. We got surf lessons from a guy named Maui (funny I know). He only does small groups (1-4 people or so) and runs a place called Da Beach House http://www.dabeachhousemaui.com/…

Kauai - Kayak the Napali coast. must must must do. You can hike it too. Both are challenging depending on the time of year but sooo worth while. Kayak inland to secret falls. Get a guide. Po'Ipu is more touristy but nice for beach days and sunbathing beside sea lions that just decide to occupy part of the beach (they're part of the 99% too I think).

I honestly have to say that I didn't want to leave. I wanted to find to immigrate there with my girlfriend and start over. All I have to say is Aloha is a real thing.
