I lived there for 6 years.

If you want remote then any Island besides Oahu is good.

Although you could go remote while in Oahu too if you really want to explore the island, I could tell you the places to stay where you wouldn't run in to many tourists at all.

Really it's about staying away from Waikiki. I think everyone should see Oahu, it's very beautiful and there are more things to do than any other island.

    Oahu must see:

    Diamond Head windsurfers
Lanikai Beach (most pristine white sand beach on Island)
Drive the Kamehameha Highway to North Shore. (East Coast of Island)
    Pineapple Fields
    North Shore (Haleiwa, Waimea, Sunset)
    Pali lookout
    Stairway to Heaven (hiking trail)
Eat at Buzz's Steakhouse in Kailua
    Sacred Falls State Park

Don't be jaded by the whole tourist thing. You will see Kalakaua Ave downtown (Wikiki strip) and then say, "OK, yeah I get it, this is the "kitchy" part of Hawaii." But if you have never been, it will be nice to walk the strip one night to see the history of the place, it's classic hotels, bars, restaurants and beaches and bazaars.

Mauai, Kauai, and Big Island are a completely diff experience from one another.
