waikiki is very populated and touristy, but we found a lot of great things to do if you're into walking the nearby downtown to shops, eateries and what not. everything was very close to our hotel, which was the outrigger (super nice). pearl harbor is on the island as well as the road to hana (you gotta get up real early to make this trip, as later in the day it's too busy). also the Hanauma bay has the absolute best snorkeling. also north beach is on this island, and in december it will get some huge waves. when we were there dec 2-10th there was a large surf tournament going on.

maui was the opposite for us. we stayed in lahaina, which was much more off the beaten path. it was about a 15 min walk to some small shops, and a 5 min bus ride to the downtown shops, which were very small. not as many people and not as populated. you'd definitely need a jeep to get to the cool spots of the island.

kauai is very secluded. if you're really looking to get away and be alone and explore, this is your best option.

i preferred waikiki to be honest. as did my wife.

    • Seclusion is our main goal; day of adventure/exploring and then a day of rest back and fourth for 10days-ish...ideaist
    • If you want adventure / exploring Kauai has lots. Bring good hiking boots and a waterproof jacket.nocomply
    • Hanauma bay had the best snorkeling 70 yrs ago. That place is beat down, If your'e going to Scuba past all the parking lot coral you might be ok.BH26
