  The flash cuts were Rick imagining what Shane was becoming. I suspect the season finally will include the line from the comics:

  

  As for the rest, they were consolidating their defences with winter coming. It was pretty clear. With the shot at the end of the zombies in the woods hearing the gun shots, it's pretty clear they're setting up a siege-and-abandon-the-farm finale.
