I dont think they knew they all had it. Thats why Daryl and Glen were surprised in the woods to see a walker that didnt have any bites. I think they all thought you had to get bit.
Thats why in season 1 when they had to cut up that walker they wore plastic bags to protect themselves. Although this is a plot hole because we've seen them kill walkers constantly and get blood on themselves.
