    I would actually recommend using something like airbnb for the first month to try out a few different neighborhoods. Then you can focus on the area that you feel fits you are your interests best. Living in Tribeca is very different than living on the LES.

    Your budget will get you a studio apt in all of those areas at varying degrees of size and niceness, or a decent one bedroom in good parts of Brooklyn. If you go into a share with that budget, you'll get more for your money.
