I had a canon 420ex die on me in a similar way.... but it also emitted a burning smell from the flash tube area...
Before this happened it hissed oddly a bit...
And the batteries got hot.....
But I probably had just shot too much too fast at a wedding gig...
I now take batteries out whenever I am not using a flash
Does this happen with alkalines or nimh rechargeables?
The sanyo eneloop nimh rechargeables are what I now use religiously and I have had no such leaks or problems since.
