    probably can be handled sans lawyer. the museum established or asked her to a valuation of the work of art so that they could insure it. they will have a large insurance policy and either the insurance co will pay out or if they don't want their rates to go up they will pay it out of pocket.

    loaning out a work that doesn't belong to them is highly unusual. sounds like doubletalk to me. somebody, likely the registrar, will have paperwork somewhere tracking the item. unless they were just negligent and all this is code for losing or accidentally damaging the work.

    in any case. no law, lawyer, nor cop can magically make the art work reappear. the only people that can return the work is the museum or the "borrowing party". this is the cost of doing business and (really) the liability your friend took on by loaning the work out to begin with.
