I suffered from panic attacks and anxiety for a few years in my early/mid twenties. You got to distinguish between the two, because it seems what you are calling a panic attack is merely anxiety. I was prescribed medication for anxiety when it was at it's worse. Can't remember what it was called but it was basically a very mild sedative; a small white chewable that I carried around with me and took whenever the need arose.

I've only ever had three "real" panic attacks... the first on a plane (though not related to fear of flying). Someone mentioned lack of sleep... leading up to that first attack I hadn't slept for several days. Just waves of anxiety that I couldn't control. The second attack I woke up in the middle of the night and thought I was having a heart attack. I tried to get up to get help, fell over and knocked my head. The third and last attack (so far) happened in the ocean while I was surfing... purely caused by the situation (but the fact that I'm susceptible to anxiety didn't help). Got caught inside, lost my board and took seven 6' waves on the head.
