Safety wise - do not wear jewelry. Do not carry an ipod, iphone, etc. Get a cheap digital camera you don't give a shit handing to a mugger. Where beach shorts a tee shirt and flip flops.
Look, I was mugged there. My friend, a Rio native was mugged there. My friends girlfriend fell asleep on the bus, woke up and all her shit was gone - off her body. Watch, phone, camera, bag. Gone.
Other than that, the place is awesome, but lots of people there want what you have and don't give a shit about shooting you or sticking a sharp object into you to get it.
