Sao Paulo is huge, bear that in mind.
I won't tell you it is dangerous, because you've already know that.If you're with locals you've got to worry about, ask'em to take you to "Vila Madalena" at night, "Jardins" for nice restaurants, "Av Paulista" for the busy brazilian life.
Other than that, sorry to say, but Sao Paulo has 11mi inhabitants, is busy, crazy traffic jam, watch out for "motoboys" (check the video), if you have a weekend free, definitely worth going to Rio de Janeiro.
