if he's going to be using opengl with CAD, just make sure he tries and avoids integrated Intel graphics chips.
I blithely recommended a laptop to a friend recently, who solely uses it for 3d/cad layouts, thinking it was really good (I mean, it is). I didn't even suspect there'd be a problem .. and yet, Rhino, Sketchup and whatever CAD program it is he uses all collapsed.
Took me fucking ages to force install an updated driver, and even then it only supports to some older version, afaik.
Anyway, just a headsup, if relevant.
