I think by "Real World" he means the bread and butter clients that pay our way that don't go for stuff as cutting edge as some of that work. The girl is lucky to have had such clients to get to do that kind of work.
It IS design. I wouldn't say "illustration" or "art", It's more "graphic illustration" supporting the designs.
Her use of typography is good. I like the work, very f-f-f-f-fresh!
