That sucks 4CY. I have been freelancing in London for a few years. Recently the offer of a job came up and I was so tired of the financial instability of self-employedness that I decided to take the position. I reckon had I not taken it I may well have been in a similar position to yourself by now. It's very difficult being a lone designer - people often don't want to pay what the work is worth and you often end up doing too much work for not enough money just to be working on something... :(
