It looks to be a 3d desktop as in, there are layers of windows but, in a way this is what we already have. Their idea of the 3d desktop appears to simply assist the feeling that there is a window in the foreground, and windows behind that, rather than skimming around a 3D world to control your pc.
I think it could work. It's more of an extension of aero than anything else.
